V i c t o r   O r t e g a

He was born in Mexico City in 1958. He earned a bachelor's degree in Social Communication from the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, Xochimilco Campus, where he worked as a full-time professor and researcher from 1981 to 2023. He obtained a master's degree in Visual Arts from the National School of Visual Arts (now the Faculty of Art and Design of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México). He currently resides in Veracruz, Mexico.

ARTISTIC AND ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE

His artistic production encompasses painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, digital graphics, installation, and sound art. His work has been selected and exhibited in numerous national and international biennials and salons in Mexico, Spain, Argentina, Venezuela, Canada, the United States, Germany, Portugal, Italy, Belgium, Slovakia, Lithuania, Turkey, Serbia, China, Japan, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Russia, and Romania. He has held six solo exhibitions and participated in more than 90 group exhibitions. Some of his works have been acquired by cultural institutions and museums.

He has worked as a teacher and researcher, as well as a graphic designer and editor. He has over 40 years of teaching experience. He has published in various specialized media outlets (book chapters and research journals) on works related to art, aesthetics, and communication. He has also published articles in newspapers and magazines.

RELEVANT ARTISTIC WORK

• To Exceed Is to Distinguish Oneself (1996). A project sponsored by FONCA (National Fund for Culture and the Arts) in which, for the first time in Mexico since José Luis Cuevas's ephemeral mural, a billboard in Mexico City was used for artistic purposes.

• Thresholds (2007-2009). Various public sculpture proposals exhibited individually and collectively, accompanied by digital photomontages and prints. Mexico City.

• Pictographic Score (2010). A sound art piece presented at the University Museum of Contemporary Art (UNAM), Mexico City.

• Images of the Anthropocene (2023). A series of drawings and paintings created with sodium hypochlorite on canvas and colored paper, presented at Foro Boca between July and August 2023. Boca del Río, Veracruz, Mexico.

WORK AS AN ACTOR

In 2024, he made his acting debut in the following stage productions:

Mirada de tres (Three's Gaze). Monologues.
Lorca, Shakespeare, Molière.
A staging of three excerpts from masterpieces of world drama, directed by Lizeth Harrison.
